La cantina

Our winery (via Nazionale n.10/A) is located about 300 metres from the residential building at via Nazionale n. 7. The winery consists of four large rooms on the ground floor: the first is used for the winemaking and the initial ageing in steel, another serves as a cellar for the already bottled wine, a third room for the “mise en barrique”, the cask ageing of our wine, and the last one serves as a sales room.

On the first floor is a comfortable room for wine tasting and special events.

Vineyards

The vineyards in the town of Briona and those in the town of Ghemme and Sizzano are located in hilly positions at about 260 meters above sea level The clay soil is characterized by stones and pebbles that reduce the vigor of the plant and thus favoring the quality of the fruit. The high plant density ensures low production yields of grapes per plant and the cultivation techniques are aimed at respecting the environment and the quality of the product. Much of the work in the vineyards is done by hand, constantly aimed at achieving the best grapes with the right degree of ripeness. The grapes are selected very carefully and numerous bunches are eliminated during the summer until just a few days before the harvest, which is done by hand, in crates, and with a rigorous selection of grapes. The pressing is immediate, immediately after harvesting, in order to maintain the maximum fragrance of the fruit, which is filled with aromas and typical of our region.

Our choice of becoming winemakers in the eastern hills of Piedmont was not casual, but a well-reasoned yet sentimental decision. Our family originally comes from northern Piedmont, the zone of vintage grapes, where the noblest DOC and DOCG regional wines have been produced for centuries.

The soil, of morainic origin, was formed on recently eroded material at the foot of the slopes and in the valleys, and the soil is particularly rich in mineral salts. The relatively cool and rainy summers allow the vines to make the most of their potential, producing grapes of excellent quality and of a characteristic color, aroma and unique flavor. Here the Nebbiolo, the prince of grapes in Piedmont, manages to give the best of itself. In addition to the bouquet and fragrance that characterize it, is an intense and long-lasting colour that is only typical of quality Nebbiolo. The prince of Piedmont vines stands alongside other regional vintage varieties such as the Barbera, Vespolina and Uva rara that we obtain our red wines from. We have always chosen to bring out the full potential of the local grape varieties, making exhalting the traditions of a land that has invariably made made wine its most valuable element.

But this attention to the past does not prevent us from taking a modern approach to winemaking. Abandoning the “maggiorino”, a typical form of local cultivation characterized by using great quantities of grapes to the detriment of qualitiy, we choose instead to have tressled rows of vines and manage the plants with Guyot pruning and constantly planting grass between the rows. The limited size of the company, about 9 hectares, allows us to use the mechanical work alongside alongside a manual management handling of certain sensitive stages (green pruning and thinning out) that are planned under the careful supervision of a consultant agronomist. This management of the vineyard, modern and environmentally friendly, is completed with the creation of the necessary pesticide treatments that are performed according to the principles of “pest management”, using environmentally-friendly techniques and products that respect the environment. All of this is enlivened by an element that is esssential for any company: passion.
